The department pays more attention to the general ability and past performance of applicants than to specific courses. Applicants must submit scores on the GRE verbal and quantitative examinations, transcripts of college work, at least two and preferably three letters of recommendation, and a sample of written work. Applicants should have a broad background in social science, especially sociology, economics, and psychology. Training in mathematics is encouraged.

Applicants must submit scores on the GRE verbal and quantitative examinations, a TOEFL score, transcripts of college work, at least two and preferably three letters of recommendation, financial statement, and a sample of written work. Applicants should have a broad background in social science, especially sociology, economics, and psychology. Training in mathematics is encouraged.

The TOEFL score is a University requirement. A minimum score of 560 is required, and a score of 600 or better is preferred.
