FINANCIAL AID
Our Department admits very few graduate students, usually only five or six per year, but we do offer financial support in the form of research assistantships and teaching assistantships to all students whom we do admit. The financial support includes the full cost of tuition, the matriculation fee, student health insurance, plus a research assistantship with a salary of approximately $17,000.00
Unfortunately, though, our financial support does not cover some expenses that a student must pay at the time the student arrives here including rent, and other living expenses until they receive their first paycheck.
There is one other financial hurdle. International students are ineligible for federal financial aid. If the Department decides to admit an international student, the University must issue a "Certificate of Eligibility" for the student to be able to obtain a visa to come to the United States. The University issues this certificate only if it can assure the US Government that the student has what the Government considers to be sufficient financial resources for full living expenses for the first year in the United States. By the Government's calculations, this is slightly more than the full-tuition fellowship, matriculation fee, and research assistantship that our Department provides. Even though most of our students haven't needed the extra funds, the University requires proof that this amount of money is available to the student should they need it. The proof can be in the form of a letter from a bank, or from an Agency of your Government. The completed Financial Statement for International Applicants (FS-1G%20Form%20-%20Fill%20in%20Format) must accompany your application and supporting materials.
