MINNESOTA POPULATION CENTER
The Minnesota Population Center (MPC) anticipates openings for Post-Doctoral Associates (Job Code 9546) for the 2008-2009 academic year. Positions would begin fall 2008.
Post-Doctoral Research Associates will work on IPUMS-USA, IPUMS–International, or related projects. The aim of these projects is to create, document, and distribute datasets of U.S. and international census microdata.
Major Functions/Needs
Researchers will investigate methodology, data quality, and compatibility of data on MPC data infrastructure projects, most of which are funded by NIH and NSF. The researchers will report to a Research Associate or Coordinator for the appropriate project. MPC Post-Doctoral Associates are expected to participate in the intellectual life of the center, presenting research at workshops and scholarly conferences and publishing related research in academic journals.
Responsibilities
Participate in the design and implementation of MPC research projects, working with faculty Principal Investigators, full-time research staff and research assistants. These tasks include:
• writing documentation,
• evaluating sampling strategies,
• designing consistent coding schemes across census samples,
• assigning numeric codes to occupation and geographic information from original census forms,
• developing algorithms to link individuals across census years, and
• coordinating data processing, data harmonization, and data checking.
Post-Doctoral Associates also collaborate with Principal Investigators and co-Principal Investigators on reports and publications. These may include conference papers, articles for publication, reports to funding agencies or advisory boards, or new proposals.
Qualifications
Required: Ph.D. in a population-related field (e.g. Sociology, Economics, History, Geography, and Public Policy). Excellent written and oral communication skills; mastery of at least one major statistical software package (SAS, Stata or SPSS); and excellent computer skills. Preferred: Competency in quantitative methods and use of statistical software package. For work on IPUMS – USA: experience using IPUMS – USA or any other large collection of census or survey data. For IPUMS- International: research experience that combines data from multiple countries or applicants with knowledge of household structure issues.
We are especially interested in recruiting outstanding postdocs who have experience collaborating with academics and technical staff in an interdisciplinary environment and could use IPUMS-USA or IPUMS-International data in their own research.

This position requires advanced data manipulation, analysis and reporting techniques and the successful candidate must be able to use tools such as SAS, SPSS, Excel and Access. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Consolidation of data from various file formats across large volumes of data from state administrative and nationally representative datasets. Build and maintain databases to ensure effective and efficient data storage and accessibility for analysis and reporting. Verify accuracy of data and recognize anomalies in data. Develop procedures for data management and statistical analyses per investigator or administrative requests using SAS and other statistical programs. Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: Masters Degree in Sociology, Economics, Information Systems, Statistics, or comparable field and one year of experience. Strong technical skills with SAS and/or SPSS.
Preferred Qualifications: Two years of experience in a similar position with demonstrated experience in data analysis and database management. Experience with spatial analysis, GIS applications, and other statistical packages.

PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY
POSITION: Assistant Professor of Rural Sociology and Demography
STARTING DATE: August 1, 2008, or as negotiated
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology, College of Agricultural Sciences, seeks applicants to fill a tenure track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. The position is co-funded with Penn State’s Children, Youth and Families Consortium. This is a 9-month, full-time appointment with a 75% research and 25% teaching responsibility. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a nationally recognized research program on the social demography of immigrant children and families living in rural and urban areas of the United States. In addition to expertise in immigration, a demographer is sought who has expertise in one or more of the following specialty areas within the field: family demography, the
demography of population health, and spatial demography. Candidates with strong quantitative skills are especially encouraged to apply. It is expected that the appointment will include a formal affiliation with Penn State’s Population Research Institute and participate in its research infrastructure and intellectual community. Teaching responsibilities will include two courses per year at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and graduate and undergraduate advising. The
candidate would be expected to contribute both to the Department’s new undergraduate program in Community, Environment and Development, as well as our dual-degree graduate program in Rural Sociology and Demography.
QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. in rural sociology, sociology, demography, or related field.

Frostburg State University's Department of Sociology invites applications for a one year Pre/Post Doctoral Teaching Position beginning August 2008.
Responsibilities: Teach four courses per semester, at least one Social Theory and an Introduction to Sociology class each semester. Additional courses will align with departmental needs and candidate's expertise.

Program Description
The Research Associate will work as a team member in the Research and Development Department under the supervision of the program director. The Program produces and disseminates information on sociology as a profession by collecting primary and secondary data, by building and maintaining databases, by developing research findings, by disseminating them through a variety of media and venues, and by working with ASA committees and task forces (see http://www.asanet.org/cs/root/leftnav/research_and_stats/research_index_page ) for examples of this work. . The goal is for a wide array of members of the profession to use this knowledge for research, policy, and planning purposes. Among the topic areas covered are departmental structures and resources, women and minorities in the pipeline, employment and salary data, labor market conditions, work and family issues and disciplinary areas of interest. The department also conducts an awards program that nurtures the development of scientific knowledge by funding small, ground breaking research initiatives.
