Using Research to Improve Student and School Outcomes by Improving Programs and Practices, Grades K-12
Welcome
The Johns Hopkins University Interdisciplinary Predoctoral Training Program is funded by the Institute for Education Sciences (IES). Its goal is to ensure that the next generation of education researchers graduating from The Johns Hopkins University has the capacity to design, implement, and evaluate research of the highest caliber aimed at identifying educational practices that produce positive outcomes for students or examining factors related to variations in the outcomes achieved by educational interventions and practices. Trainees receive training in a core discipline (education, sociology, or mental health) and integrate research perspectives and techniques from the other disciplines, working toward research that is comprehensive and methodologically sophisticated. Access to the state-of-the-art research strategies being developed and implemented by the affiliated academic departments and the Center for Social Organization of Schools (CSOS), Hopkins’ educational research and development center, is an integral component of the Training Program.
In addition to coursework in a home department, fellows apply their research skills and are exposed to additional perspectives through multidisciplinary seminars, a set of rigorous methodology course requirements specific to the Training Program, an annual Summer Research Institute, and intense research involvement.
The Training Program is a partnership of five academic departments and CSOS. Each of the doctoral programs is strong in its own right, with rigorous methods requirements. In the Department of Sociology, training is from a sociology of education disciplinary perspective; in the Department of Mental Health, training is from a developmental science/prevention science disciplinary perspective; and in the School of Education, training is from an education practice perspective.
We hope you take the time to explore this website and to learn more about this exciting training program and the rich array of educational research opportunities available to Trainees.
Sincerely,

Karl Alexander
